Promoting Sustainable Energy for Education in Albania
The project “Promoting Sustainable Energy for Education in Albania” supports the transition of Preca College in Korçë toward clean energy and improved energy efficiency. Implemented by SOS Malta in partnership with Friends of Korça, and funded through Malta’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) programme, the initiative aims to demonstrate how renewable energy can strengthen educational institutions and contribute to national climate goals.
Why Preca College?
Preca College is an important educational institution established over 30 years ago with the support of SOS Malta. The school currently faces increasing energy consumption and significant costs, as confirmed by a detailed Energy Audit Report conducted in June 2025. The audit shows an average yearly consumption of ~17,000 kWh of electricity and 82,800 kWh of LPG, resulting in notable CO₂ emissions.
Core Interventions
- Installation of a 12 kWp Solar Photovoltaic System
Based on the feasibility study and PV simulation, a 12 kWp rooftop solar plant will generate approximately 18,470 kWh per year, fully covering the school’s annual electricity needs and reducing CO₂ emissions by 37 tons/year.
The investment has a payback period of 2.4 years and brings annual savings of €3,110, making the school energy-independent and cost-efficient.
- Energy Efficiency Measures (EEMs)
Following the recommendations of the Energy Audit, the project includes:
- Replacement of outdated fluorescent tubes with LED lighting
- Replacement of halogen spotlights with LED units
These upgrades will reduce electricity demand, improve indoor learning conditions, and extend equipment lifetime.
Impact on Climate & Education
The project strengthens Albania’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by:
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Increasing renewable energy use
- Promoting energy security and independence
- Enhancing awareness among students about green transition technologies
Local Engagement & Transparency
Friends of Korça leads coordination with local authorities, engineers, and community stakeholders. Public procurement was carried out through an open Expression of Interest ensuring full transparency and competition.
A Model for Scaling Across Albanian Schools
The successful implementation at Preca College is designed as a replicable model for other educational institutions across Albania, showing how modest investments can generate long-term environmental and economic benefits.
